In words, you can read the arrow as,
"yields", or "reacts to form".
Basically, it tells you the direction of the chemical reaction and what is happening.

For example,
A + B --> AB
A and B react to form AB, or,
Reacting A and B yields AB.
The arrow tells you that there is a chemical reaction going on and that it proceeds from the left (reactants side) to the right )(products side).
It is possible to have a reversible reaction or a reaction in which an equilibrium exists between the "reactants" and "products" such that the reaction can proceed in both directions. In this case, you would have a double arrow, <==>.

It symbolizes the reaction. Its shows the transition from reactants to products and seperates them. Usually it translates as "yields."
