I know that war was declared on July 28th, but when was there actual fighting? thanks.

originally thought it would take 40 days but the russian were fighting the germans sooner. assassination took place 6/28/14 and the germans and russians were fighting in late august. july was spent trying to avoid the war and giving the serbs an ulitatum which they did not sign. so i would say about 20 days actually to get started once war was bound to happen

Russia was basically ready right after Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated and germany began to mobilize. Once the Germans started fighting, the Russkies were ready.
