lets say x= amount invested stocks and y the amount invested in bonds

x+y =6000 (y=6000-x)
0.06x+0.11y =580 (substitute 6000-x in place of y)

0.06x +0.11(6000-x) =580
0.06x +660-0.11x = 580
660-580 = 0.11x -0.06x
80 = 0.05x
80/0.05 = x
x =$1600 therefore y = 6000-1600= 4400

She invests $1600 in stocks and $4400 in bonds.

Ok the basic investment is $6000

Let call Stocks "S" and Bonds "B"

so that S + B = 6000

calculating the interest you have (0.06 x S) +(0.11 x B) = 580

So now you have two equations and two unknowns. Solve one equation for one of the unknowns substitute it into the other equation and solve it.
