It depends on which countries you are talking about clearing customs. Regardless, you absolutely do not try to take it on board the plane. You pack it in your check-in baggage, disasembled as much as possible, with a big note attached to it that states it is a replica, for display purposes only, and not a working weapon. If you have any professional requirements for having such a prop, place copies of such paperwork in with the replica.

I'd take yet another step to ensure their trust in you and possibly even speed up the process without any strip searching or deeper investigation...
Simply encase the gun in a box and bring it to customs first thing. Then proceed to inform them what the box contains as you hand it to them - being completely honest.
Also, make sure you are not caught in an area with a very low to no amount of witnesses around so that there are no "accidental" quick judgement calls... "... but he had a gun. I was worried for my life..."
Overall, I would be careful because carrying a gun (even fake) is seen as a real threat until proven otherwise.

Bring any kind of paperwork regarding registration, modifications etc. If it's not yours, ie. a prop rental, bring the paperwork from the prop house.
And like you said, declare it. Right as you check in. They will need to check it of course, even if it's in your checked bag.
If you are traveling out of the country you have to be particularly careful. It can be viewed as arms trade by certain governments. One of those things they will arrest first, ask questions later. I had to get an import/export license once when going to Belize.
PLEASE IGNORE THE PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO KEEP IT A SECRET. Checked bags are screened. They find it and you're spending quality time with the customs agents, police, FBI....

Its best not to do it. If you got it from places around the middle east "iraq, iran, ect" I woudn't even mention it and throw it away at the airport or risk getting shot lol. If its from somewhere close i'd just mail it to your house through Fedex or something. I got like 3 airsoft guns through but only because it was plastic. You may say its fake but who knows, mabey you'll open it, pull out parts for a ak47 and hijack a place.

you need to decare it before you even get to the airport to avoid a potential security situation. DO NOT PULL IT YOU OF YOUR BAG OR POCKET WITHOUT FIRST TELLING PEOPLE OR THEY WILL FREAK OUT (it's shoot to kill in airports)Contact your airline and the aiport for more information. The other alternative is to mail it. I have a had a metal bar taken off me in the past by airport security. If they allow the fake gun then you should put it in your big luggage and not your carry on bag.

Disassemble it as much as possible and pack it in a separate, locked case to be checked with your luggage. Beyond that will depend on which country you are traveling to. Contact the airport before hand to get a full set of guidelines for your destination.
Hope this is helpful.

Declare it to the ticket agent and pack it in your bag. Make sure everybody knows its in there. You may want to mark the bag.
Also you better call to see if its alowed.

Get a thick book, cut a gun shape out of the pages and hide it in there.

why even try? it is incredibly selfish of you to even attempt that. you know how hypersensitive the airports are right now to security threats. why even try and potentially scare a lot of people, put hundreds of security personell into a frenzy, and make people late for their flights? Is your toy gun really that important to you????
