I have no problem connecting to the internet right after booting my computer, but if I leave my computer on and come back a couple hours later, I can not connect to the internet. Sometimes if I click on "repair" it will connect, but majority of the time it doesn't work and I need to reboot. What causes my computer to act like this? I am pretty sure it is not the provider, because I have had cable and DSL service and have had the same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I stopped having that problem with broadband when I plugged the modem into the network adapter instead of a USB port.

I'd like to know if you find a solution to this, the same problem is plaguing me right now, and I can't figure out why.
I have a DSL connecton, 1 desktop & 1 notebooks, both running XP, and another notebook running 98.) The notebooks experience no problems, so its not the connection.
All was right with the world until I reinstalled XP.
The notebooks are fine - no loss of internet persistence.
But I usually have to reboot the desktop machine to reconnect. Sometimes I get the message that I'm not connected and am given the "Work Offline / Retry" dialogue box. Clicking Retry sometimes works.
Often the dialogue box doesn't appear, and sometimes when it does, Retry doesn't work.
Having to reboot to access an "always on"(!) internet connection seems like NTWTDT (Not The Way To Do Things!)

Do you happen to have hybernate running? or standby? On desktop computers, you really should have hard disks "never" turned off and not hibernated or stand by enabled. Usually, only the monitor is controlled by power options.

It would make sense if one of those things are enabled. They're usually meant for laptops.
