I think its just mom trying to get kids to wear their hats. but heat does rise and your head is the highest point so there must be some truth to it. But i think the thing is heat is loss mainly through your head, ever see the football players in cold weather and the steam coming off the top of their heads, but that still leave 20 percent for the rest of the body. You wont be warmer, if you butt naked but wearing a hat, you just wont lose as much body heat if you have the hat vs rest of your clothing.

if you take this statistic to be accurate, it works based on the assumption that you are at the time WEARING CLOTHES, i.e. you would lose 80 per cent of your body heat through your head if it were uncovered, whilst the rest of your body (bar your hands) was not.
this is because although clothed, the rest of your body is only partially insulated, and it continues to lose heat (the other twenty per cent), although at a slower rate than it would if you were naked.
even if your logic were sound, wearing a hat would not be good enough- as it only covers a proportion of your head.
you would need to wear something like a well-insulated balaclava or ski mask, though if a naked man was walking around the street with a balaclava on his head, losing body heat would be the least of his worries.... like spending some time in a mental institution, or jail.

You a girl or a guy? At any rate I suggest the first test be a control test for one hour in the summer filmed in colour. Do the next test in fall and then in winter, Post the film and findings on the internet.

i think you are having a good time asking this question ? :-)
of course , the heat of your body will escape trough an uncovered head , it is a fact .
now ? if you wish to go out nude but with only your head covered ? you will get arrested for indecent exposure ? :-)
but worry not ? you will be in a warm place for a while , and probably hotter ,while in front of the Judge ?! and ? no escape of anything there ............
:-)

It is about surface area, but you are right to point out that no-one mentions area when they repeat this 'pop fact' without thinking.
Lol :-)
