Microsoft will discontinue support meaning you won't be able to receive any security updates. I recommend updating to SP2 - it's free at http://www.windowsupdate.com

security updates for xp will only be supported for xp sp2 from now on, microsoft have stopped all support for any xp under service pack 2, also sp2 is more secure anyway than sp1. sp2 is also available for download at www.softwarepatch.com
