I just received a DVR recorder from my Cable company which appears old. its capable of recording 50 non-hd hours. is this typical? Should I switch to TIVO?

That sounds about right for a cable company. 50 hours is pretty high for a cable company. Tivo tends to be more generous, considering they charge more for upfront cost and monthly fees than cable companies.

I bought the Dish Network 2 years ago, and the
DVR that came with it will record 100 hours.
Get the Dish or Direct TV.

I had Direct tv/tivo it held 80 hours. Dish holds 100 hours.
