Get a normal maid costume and kind of rip it up and put on a hat.

Go to the library or rent a movie from that era, maybe a catalog at the library and see the style. I'm sure it was very sensible and very varied depending on the family that hired you. they would usually decide on the attire, wheather it be very conservative or not...then you could call a rental place for halloween, they mey rent at a discount right now. Ask them what they have for that timeframe, they are usually up on these things. Good luck. You might use a nurses uniform and convert it, they wore no jewelry, maybe an apron and a hat or small tierra sort of hat.

they look somewhat like nurses costumes, except they have puffy shoulder pads, they wear some sort of nurse hat too. so they pretty much were nurses because not only did they clean but also cared for the family. the dress is either black or white, if its white, a black apron goes with it, and vise versa.
this coming from a 6th grader may help. I'm sorry i cant help u with the stores, maybe if u know how to sew, u can buy some fabric and make the dress.

Definitely, try a costume store. Right now is a good time since Halloween is around the corner. And I would definitely go before Halloween as a lot of people tend to shop on the last day. So, I'd go before all of your size is gone. Also, it's best to go in person so you can determine the quality and everything.

Long, simple, long-sleeved black dress. White apron. Black tie-up shoes. Goofy-looking frilly maid hat. No jewelry. Hair should be pulled back.
Not too flattering, probably, but oh well.
