In my opinion....no. If your relationship has gotten to the point that someone has to go and you can not coexist in the same home....then how can being apart help? How do you work on your relationship over the phone?

I personally don't know of to many separations that go well, most couples separate because of the lack of communication. Then while in separation mode it gives time to look at possible other partners. Go to marriage counseling to get help and talk about your problems the old adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder works if your relationship is sound and separation is due to work or school etc but not while having relationship problems.

You could look at it a couple of ways.If you were to separate with the intentions of working it out but give it some time to mellow out. This could be a good thing abiding that each stick to the agreement of being faithful to each other. Now on the other hand if you were to separate and one or both of you didn't stay faithful to the other then things could be very messy. Both of you should talk it out and set some ground rules as to what each one wants to accomplish by separating. If both of you can't agree on the rules and are uncomfortable with them you may be causing more harm than good.

i'm in the middle of a separation right now...at first we went into it saying "oh we will work things out, we just need to calm down for a little while"..but now i think we both realize that we are much happier people apart...i don't think we're going to get back together...but by law, we have to be separated a year before we can file for divorce..so alot can change in a year.

i think if you are the point that you feel you need to separate...then do it, b/c it's only going to make the situation worse if you stick around, all the while thinking "i just want to get away from this person"

Sometimes actually leaving helps the other see the error of their ways. Sometimes it relieves them of all responsibility and they won't take you back. There are a lot of variables. If you are considering it - to improve, think carefully. If you are already separated and hopeful - best of luck. It's a tough road to take.
