Depends on your current carrier.. a cingular phone can be unlocked for t-mobile & vice versus, sprint unlocked for verizon & vice versus..... No corporate store will help you with this info. You need to call around to privately owned cell shop. Or try your local swapmeet... by the way once you find someone to unlock the phone DO NOT pay over 20 bucks... all they do is hook it up to thier computer, it takes less than 5 minutes... if you dont have a local shop, send me a message & worse case scenario, you can send it to my store & we'll unlock it for you... don't listen to all the other noobs who answered...

You cannot acquire these free of charge. You have to purchase either an unlocking device, or a code from the service provider it is locked to as they vary for each phone and service provider the phone is locked to. So cool that you can buy 'em on ebay.
Cheer!
Check it if you need:

as far as i understand verizon phones such as the razr are locked which means they can only be used with verizon. most other phone are unlocked. i would suggest going to the other carrier and tell them you want to switch but you want to use your phone. maybe they will even hook you up with a new phone on a great deal so you will become a customer.

why is it locked?....the only time they usually are locked is if you havent paid your bill....or like for us...we had our sons phone locked because he stopped paying us his payment for 6 months...we got him one becasue he had no credit yet....he was 19...so he promised to pay every month....but after 6 months he stopped....so we put a lock on it....need to have a pass word to unlock it....and he didnt know the pass word.......
