Government

Greece has been a republic since December 1974 when it transitioned from being a constitutional monarchy. The country is governed by a prime minister that has a cabinet which reports to the 300 member legislature. The legislature is elected to 4-year terms, and in turn selects the President for a 5-year term.

The country is divided into 13 regions. Each region is subdivided into departments. There are about 50 departments (or "nomoi"). Thses have been granted increased autonomy in terms of local government.

The government has had its ups and downs, but seriously, Greece is a neat place to live. Have spent much time there, when I'm not in LA and leaving is never easy.

Parliamentary representation with chief of state a president. Why?? Where politicians rarely invoke god and where freedom of speech and information is way beyond what the US knows. Why???
