I want the guide that mechanics use to judge how long a job will take.

well it's kinda hard to get the books you have to have a dealers license first they don't just sell em..most of your shops now deal with an online estimating system so the books have almost became non exsitent mitchell and chisum are the two most commonly used so if your looking to get one for your home good luck ..u might find one that's outdated or on ebay maybe but there not for sell to the public i paint cars for a living same principle work off commision and by labor hours.....

Why not call one and ask how much they charge. our mechanic has a book that tells him how long each job should take and how much to charge. It comes from the dealership, say Ford or Chevrolet...the factory supplies the books to certified mechanics at the dealership. Maybe ask them how to get one.

Check out ebay. I believe the company that makes them is Mitchell. You can ususally find books under that name and even if you pick up one that is outdated, it will still give you an idea of how long a job will be.
