I never wash comforters that are important to me. They mat and lose their warmth if you launder them. Instead, it's best to spend the $15 to take it to a dry cleaner and have it professionally cleaned and refreshed so that it doesn't lose any of the great properties that attracted you to it in the first place.

If you are worried about the comforter flattening out after you wash it, Put it in the dryer ON THE LOWEST SETTING POSSIBLE and put a CLEAN tennis shoe in with it, the knocking around of the shoe helps keep the Fibers /and or feathers from sticking together.
I work in a Hotel with some rather expensive linens and this is the method we use for the pillows as well, the shoe will not damage the fabric or the machine, you can also use NEW tennis balls to get the same result.

a down alternative can be washed like anything else. no need to dry clean.
if you have a friend with a front loading washer, ask them to borrow if to clean your comforter. if you are lucky, they will also have the big dryer!
if no friend, then go the laundromat. most have front loaders these days.
use warm water and liquid detergent.
it will be just fine.
my comforters are the only reason i got a front loader.

It should have washing instructions sewn into a seam somewhere. I would suggest that you take it to a laundromat, get one of those big machines and wash it in cold water and dry on low.

You should have received cleaning instructions when you got it. If there is no down, I would wash it on the gentle cycle and line dry.
