As some previous responses have said, the bears were used for experimentation and being held in the cages. I think the experimentation may have had something to do with getting male polar bears pregnant, as the blonde doctor was working on something like this, or it could have just been to see how they could get polar bears to withstand global warming so they wouldn't become extinct.
When you have the Lost producers asking us what we think is killing people on the island, then they probably don't know yet themselves. :)

I think because it is a mysterious island. Things are just not right on that island. I think the creators of the show did a great job by putting it in there because it shows that things are not always as they seem. They were expecting this massive evil creature and instead they found out it was a polar bear. Great twist.

Because you know that place that the "others" live, well Sawyer was being held in a cage, that cage was part of a zoo kind of thing, but the "others" let the bear and other animals out. I don't know why though.

it was an experiment,and the bear was held in the cages that sawyer,and Kate were in,remember when it took Sawyer about 2 hours to get the biscuit,the guy looked at him and said the bears only took 10 minutes
