I am 16 years old. How much do I really need per night?

And if I can't get that full amount in a night, how few hours should I sleep so that I am not completely wiped the next day?

As in, I heard that getting 4 hours of sleep will keep you going more than say, 5 will because of something to do with the REM cycle...

...but you will crash eventually. At your age you need the sleep. Weight until you have infants who need your attention at ungodly hours of the night, you'll wish you could sleep all night then. So until then take advantage of the fact that you don't have to cut sleep.

If you are exerting a lot (physically) your body needs rest so that it gets time to repair and grow, at your age about 7 hours. But even if you are studying hard you require sleep to rest your brain cells, for 5-6 hours . If you supplement your sleep with meditation then you will need less hours of sleep. While meditating, let your thoughts flow as they come, and try to move towards a state of mind where you think of nothing but blank space. This will flush out the troubling thoughts(garbage) out of your head and keep you refreshed and positive for the rest of the day. If you sleep with some unresolved issues and do not think on it by meditating, those issues keep on gathering in your brain and you may have trouble sleeping and may face conflicts with other people.

That was some pretty heavy stuff! But I think you will get the essence of what I have to say. Be happy!

its different for every person. my psych teacher taught us to go to bed on a weekend or some night where you don't have to wake up early for anything the next day, and sleep until you wake up and feel completely rested. use that to gauge what you need and try to sleep that many hours every night. rem sleep is really important. in a study with rats, those that were deprived of rem sleep suffered big time and i can't remember, but i think some of them died.

Actually at your age you need about 10 hours of sleep. When people keep depriving themselves of sleep it can mimic ADD..lack of concentration. I had this problem and almost lost my job because I could not concentrate on my duties. Nothing else is important enough to not get enough sleep.
