I know they're like assistants for lawyers..but what exactly is the type of work they do for them?

Note: I live in Canada so it may be different in the States.

I could be wrong....but here in the US, I always thought the clerks were lawyers who worked under judges and did a lot of the admin work for the judge like look up previous judgements/verdicts, was the organizer of the courtroom, and read the verdicts.

I thought paralegals were the lawyers' helpers.
