We live in the country and my dog found something very foul smelling, rolled in it and even after I have bathed him he kinda smells. I think he rolled in something dead out in the woods, this has not been pleasant and I really don't want him riding to the groomers in my car. He is not as bad as he was, but it is still there.I don't want to spray something harmful on him, but would like to have him smell better before I put him in my car to take him in for a proper bath, he is border collie and ausie so he is not a small dog. Any great formulas out there to help with the smell?

Hey! It sounds like you have a happy dog!

Dogs have a natural instinct to mask their dog odor with something natural. Poop, something rotten, grass, etc. This is part of their hunting instinct, so they can mask their body odor as a predator while hunting. Your pooch may not even know how to hunt, but they still remember to mask that scent. There are other reasons too! Still for whatever reason, that is normal.

So you are taking Fido to the beauty parlor. Don't be surprised that as soon as you get home from the parlor he/she will find the biggest, smelliest pile of stink he/she can find to roll in to mask that fresh clean smell you just paid a small fortune for. It's more likely it's a he.

To lessen the smell, first wet him down with a bottle of cider vinegar, then follow with a couple of BIG cans of tomato juice will do the trick. Soak him down with it, let it set till it almost becomes tomato paste, rinse well, dry, and put him in the car ASAP! Cause he will start looking for another pile!!!!

This is also about the best stink remover that I know of, and will lessen greatly the wonder dog that gets a direct hit from a polecat! (ie Skunk)

Have fun! I didn't...

Vinegar based solution with water should take the sting out of the smell. You can also cover him up in cloth so as to not get the smell in the car.

Take him to the vet if he has any weird symptoms but take him for a proper bath since it might be something harmful - bacteria-wise.

It is a primitive instinct dogs have kept. In the wild they would need to cover their scent so would be prey couldn't smell them coming.
As far as covering the smell, getting rid of a dead animal smell is close to impossible without a proper bath...I would recommend hosing your dog down outside with a light shampoo you can just put on and wash off without touching him. Conditioner works just as well and you don't have to work it in. Vinegar works well too...Smells just like a salad after!!!

My dog tangled with a Skunk and I smeared tomatoe paste all over him and left him outside all day and with him rolling around the yard trying to get the paste off the smell went with him. Paste is cheaper than trying sauce.

They do it because what smells bad to us does not necessarily smell bad to them. they do it as kind of a perfume or cologne to get them noticed by another mate. I think. I could be wrong. The onlyt hing that can take care of this is a good dog shampoo. Try the more expensive kind. You might try using rubber gloves also.

dogs roll in stuff so they eliminate or cover up their smell. OR at least try. So id say go to a good dog store pet store and get some good dog shampoo, but five minutes after u shampoo him hell be back out rollin around.... endless job.... goodluck

this may sound funny but give him a bath with tomato sauce or ketchup. Just use the tomato sauce instead of shampoo rinse and then clean him with regular shampoo. My dad did it to our dog and himself when they got sprayed by a skunk and it works! good luck.
