She is a Countess actually. In the opening to the play she is mourning the recent death of her brother and father. Orsino (The Duke) is attracted to Olivia, of course she doesn't harbor the same feeling for him. Viola (disguised as Cesario for the majority of the play) believing her brother is dead, assumes the role as a page for Orsino, and is sent to Olivia to relay a message, Olivia believing Viola a man, falls in love with him/her. Olivia's character just adds to the comedy of the play!

i imagine she is dependable in her devotion to Orsinio and to her "lifeless" brother's memory. i imagine she is smart in coming up with a way of turning her shipwreck tragedy right into a plan so as that she will be ready to live on. and she or he's wise in her dialogues with Olivia.
