Someone keeps telling me that all the people in Lost are actually dead, and they have to do something to get off the island. Is this true? Please don't give away the plot or anything unless you have to!

That is ONE of the many theories of Lost.
It is allegedly debunked by the producers, but I take what they say with a grain of salt.
There are lots of theories. Them being dead (or in purgatory) is just one of them.

Yes, they are dead and they have to work through whatever their issue is before they move on. It is kinda like pergatory.
