Or television, idiot box, goggle box, boob-tube (archaic), and many other names.
The picture encoding system in UK is PAL (phase alternate line) whereas in the US it is NTSC (national television standards committee), or as we like to call them in the industry; PAL = picture always lousy, NTSC = never the same colours.
