I've studied this extensively in my graduate and post-graduate studies and virtually NO respected historians believe the American colonies could have defeated England without the assistance of the French. For America to take credit for the victory is like a five year-old (America) returning from a hunting trip with his father (France) to kill a bear (England) and after the bear is killed the child proudly proclaims, "Yup. Me and daddy killed the bear."
That pretty much sums up France's role in the War for American Independence.
And there you have it.

The French provided a great deal of material aid (entire ships, cannon, gunpowder, shot, guns, money and so on) as well as a lot of moral support and a few outstanding volunteer officers (Like the Marquis de Lafayette). The French fleet offshore was a decisive factor in the battle of Yorktown.
On the other hand, the war was very unpopular in Britain, and the American strategy of avoiding pitched battles was working well. Then again, the colonies weren't cooperating all that well with each other, and an astute British administration may have come up with separate peace plans for each colony. It's one of the impoderables of history.

The French supplied the Americans with war material, General Lafayette, and kept a whole lot of British troops and navy busy in Europe during the Revolution. Assets that weren't available to fight in America.

I think they still win, though it is very difficult to say, it would have been much harder. The French gave us most of our ammunition, supplies, and very vitale aid.
