I forward emails and other attachments to the desktop. These attachments use "xls". Once i get them to the desktop they cant be opened. It says windows needs to know what program created it. I used the web svc to find and and am directed to Microsoft downloads. Didnt work..I might need microsoft excel???

yep .xls are excel files you can open them with open office its free. Or you can buy Windows Excel.

right click the file-go to open with option-choose window excel from the list of program but if windows excel is not given in the list then --
browse the program.then choose the program.

xls is an ms excel file format. so you need a ms excel to open it. or if you don't want to buy ms. excel. try installing Open Office, this software is free. and try to open the file.

You DO need microsoft excel.
