I know of someone that died and he has a facebook account. Now everyone is writing RIP on his wall...but what happens now? Will his profile close soon?

More than likely the family will someway or another get the password and delete the Facebook account. However if the person was say a teenager the family usually makes their Facebook page a memorial page for them.

Facebook has no way of knowing when someone dies obviously. It will probably just stay there unless you write to Facebook asking for it to be deleted.

the same thing happens with myspace, who doesn't delete the accounts after inactivity. the accounts stay open.

they won't close it, it is up to anyone that has access to close it, or it will shut down after about 30 days with most accounts.

for myspace, they actually have a registry of users who have passed, people probably report it to them or something.. it is http://mydeathspace.com

This happened to my friend and it was just weird. Our friends wrote and contacted them to take it down, and it only took about 2 days.
