Riding a motorcycle is dangerous, but so is skydiving, crossing a busy street, falling down a flight of stairs, etc. In general life is dangerous. It's all about recognizing the dangers and trying to minimize your chances of having something happen. If you don't know how to ride, take a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course. They're offered all over the country. They provide the bikes. Riding a motorcycle is like being invisible. No one is looking for you out on the road. That's the real danger. I have found that riding with the assumption no one can see you has helped me avoid many potential collisions.
The positive aspects of riding a bike far outway the negative. The fresh air, the wind in your hair, the sense of total freedom and being out there with nature. The sounds, the smells and the sights all take on a different feel than from the inside of a car. The only negative about riding a bike is that where I live winter snow and ice limit riding for several months out of the year.
Don't ride a bike just to get good mileage. A lot of cars can get pretty close or even exceed the gas mileage of some bikes. Plus you'll probably end up riding your bike far more than you drove your car, just for the enjoyment, and end up consuming the same amount of gas.
Insurance on a bike is a lot cheaper than on a car. If you're going to have both though it obviously won't save you any cash. Since you're 18 you're in the high risk age group so you're going to pay higher rates than those of us more seasoned riders. Insurance for a bike and insurance for a car have one thing in common. The bigger the engine size and the more power, the higher your premium.
With all of this said, you will love riding a motorcycle and you will get hooked. Welcome to the world of motorcycling and remember to wave at any other biker you pass.

anything over walking speed carries some risk. but for those that respect the power a bike is capable of, u wont have any problems. most of the time, the main problems is rookies that grab a high powered crotch rocket and have zero experience on these bikes, and wind up riding beyond their skill level...and this can apply to cruisers simply by trying to blast into a curve too fast.
bikes get great gas mileage...i get 55 mpg and i only have a 3.3 gallon tank. a clean record could have some weight, but if u want to have cheaper insurance, i highl suggest u avoid the rice rockets until u are over 25. simply because the insurance co will equate a rocket with a corvette....and u know what would happen if an 18 yr old tries to insure a ride like that.
here is the biggest con. cager's typically dont see u, and u will never win an engagement with a car...even a fender bender can kill u if god says its time. always ride as if u are invisable, and expect all cager's to do the wrong things in every which way.
other cons: unlike cars, gravel, sand, and oil in a corner will take u down. and any animal that's bigger than a dog will also take u down. but the biggest plus is.......nowhere can u get the feeling of flying without wings than being on a bike. everything is different. the sights, the sounds, the smells. it's totally different.

More dangerous? Depends who's driving.
For me, it's all pros. With rain gear/ cold weather gear and saddlebags, there are no cons.
If you only want one for the mileage, buy a car. There are quite a few that get better mileage now.
Insuring just a motorcycle is probably cheaper than insuring just a car. Either way, single 18 year old males are the highest risk group.

Driving anything is dangerous but remember that you have half as many tires as a Cage and cages do not look for motorcyclist as far as Insurance mine is cheaper than my auto Even on cold days I had rather be on my scoot than a cage. Unless you have been on one you can't explain the feeling I used to worry about riding but the way I look at it If it your time to go it will happen whether you are on a cycle or in a car or sitting in the living room of your home GOOD LUCK and RIDE SAFE

Driving a motorcycle is dangerous, just as driving any vehicle. In my years of riding experience i have had many near accidents. All of these were due to the lack of paying attention of the people driving other vehicles. I would recommend riding to everyone. If everyone would ride, they would pay more attention to the other riders.
Insurance is cheaper for a motorcycle than another vehicle because there is less chance of property damage to other vehicles and less chance of bodily injury to other drivers.
If you do decide to ride, this is my suggestion. Take it for grantit that NO ONE sees you on the road. Watch for ALL vehicles crossing your line of travel or in the lane next to you. And YOU stay in control of the bike at all times.
Personally, I don't worry much about the danger of it. I'm a Christian and I firmly believe that God will take me when it's my time and not before, whether it be on my bike or on my couch.

anything is dangerous if your jackass esp riding a motorcycle. also, even if your the best rider in the world... it doesn't say much for the person next to you whether it be a car or another bike... stuff happens... but when your on a bike it can be more catastrophic... the only thing you can do is prepare for the worse.. full gear etc... but on the lighter side.... you can always use carpool... save money on gas... and its fun to go riding....
expect to pay high insurance... esp if you get a crotch rocket... do more research... go on other forums... ASK MORE QUESTIONS!!!! look around and do your home work....

Yes driving a motorcycle is very dangerous. First you have to know what you are doing, its kinda like riding a bicycle.... at 75 mph....in the rain.... on slick roads....
Then there is the real problem.... all those people who aren't riding motorcycles. If you run into the old that just ran the stoplight in your little honda civic, the airbags will deploy and you may get a slight bruise on your forehead. However if you run into the same old lady on your honda motorcycle, the only thing between your face and the side of her car is air, and it doesn't work nearly well as an air BAG.
If you know how to drive a motorcycle, they are far nimbler, quicker and better able to dodge all those 4-18 wheelers out there trying to kill you. Liability insurance is a lot less (after all your head won't make a very large dent in that old lady's car). But for gas mileage..... there are a lot of cars out there that do better for gas mileage then a lot of the motorcycles out there. And they have those neat inventions called "heaters" and "airconditioners".... not to mention cup holders and airbags.
