My battery is 5 years old. It's in a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's been working fine until this morning. I turn the key and it won't turn over. No headlights either. It was starting fine until last night. Today I put a multimeter on the battery and it showed 0.14 volts. Can a battery drain that fast overnight? I'm positive I didn't leave anything on after I parked it last night.

Your battery has died in the cold - they often don't even last that long. And yes, it will happen that fast. The lead plates become thin and brittle as a result of time and the chemical reaction that produces electricity. Then internal shrinking from the cold snaps a connection inside the battery, making it immediately dead, and unable to hold a charge. Better buy a new one.

You may not have left anything on, but the battery may have been dead when you parked. The car could have been running off the current generated by the alternator.

If you got 60 months out of your battery, you did good. Time for a new one, bro.

Good luck

Well 5 years is average life span of a battery, so it could be done and yes it could happen overnight. You can charge it and see if it will hold and for how long but budget in for a new battery.

It shouldnt have drained like that overnight.... when you checked the battery you probably put the leads on the terminals.... take the terminals off the battery and wire brush the connections good, put the terminals back on and try it again.

Yup, a 5 year old battery is at the end of it's life. You could have it checked but most likely it has it least one shorted cell. Charge it or jump it and take it to autozone and have them check it.
