Rhode Island is an island, but now it is mainly known as Aquidneck Island. On Aquidneck Island are the towns of Portsmouth, Middletown, and Newport.

Why is it called Rhode Island? Well, this is debatable but some feel that when the explorers travelled near the island it looked red, so they called it "Red Island". Others felt it looked like the Isle of Rhodes, and called it Rhode Island after that.

As other people said, the official name of R.I. is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". The "plantations" are the mainland part, but since it's so long a name, everyone cals it just Rhode Island.

The official name of the state is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." Pretty understandable why they'd start shortening it. Regradless, "Rhode Island" is the largest island in Narangassett Bay. Newport, Rhode Island, a rather famous city, is its largest city. The other part of the state is the mainland--"Providence Plantations"--and it's major city, as you might guess, is Providence.

So, yes, Virginia, there IS a Rhode Island, but it's not what many people seem to think.

Rhode Island is one of the 48 continental United States, located on the east coast of the US northeast of New York, wedged in between Massachusetts and Connecticut.
It is not an island, but does have islands within its borders.

Rhode Island is NOT an island. It is in the mainland of the United States. It is surrounded by the states of Connecticut (East), Massachussetts (North and East), and the Atlantic Ocean (South).
