An adult painted turtle normally gets between 4-10 inches.

4-10 inches, like mentioned above. They will outgrow a 55 gallon tank, so if you want one, I recommend a 90gal or a pond. My turt is about 3 inches(shell length) and has not grown much since july. He lived in a 20 gal, then I moved him to the 55gal. During summer, he was let outside in a kiddie pool filled five inches with water. Lovely little turtles, but train yours not to bite. It hurts.
