Every man is born with a very unique gift, the gift of selective hearing. You have this gift even tho you might not know it or used it yet. Now is your time to shine and use your gift.
To use and fine tune your skills is easy, you just ignore her when you want to watch something and the more you do this the more your skills will increase and before you know it you will be able to be in a mall with 1,000's of women yacking away and you will still be able to watch a show on tv at an electronics store and never even hear those women.
Be free young grasshopper.

Talk to her when the television is off and explain her how you dislike that in a calm way. Ask her if she feels like she is not getting enough attention from you, because that seems to be the problem. Work out a compromise with her, where she and you spend quality time together away from the television. Once she got the attention she might just stop talking while you watch tv.

If your wife does not stop then you need to accept that she just likes to talk for the talking. Buy her a television, put it in a different room, close the door and let her talk in front of her tv...

How many hours straight do you stare at the screen? 5? 6?

Try this approach:

[1] ask her that during the first 30 minutes of you coming home, no dumping everything on you. peace and quiet. That's because we don't really unwind on the drive home - we need unwind time when we get home. It doesn't happen on the road. so no yakking for 30 minutes. AND NO TV. then just sit down. NO TV. NONE. Sit at the table and just look around and watch her and look out the window and slow down and let your mind unwind. becuase if you don't do it now, you will try to do it all night by using the television as a mental sedative. so for 30 minutes, NO TV!

[2] pick ONE hour long show. Tell her when it's on and that during it, there's no IMPORTANT talking. Talking is okay just nothing IMPORTANT.

[3] Then for 90 minutes before the show or after, at least mute the goddamned thing and ignore it or turn it off, put on 94.7 the wave real soft, and listen to her.

[4] Fair is fair. you got 90 minutes of no talking so give her 90 minutes of talking. by then it's time to go to bed and screw like bunnies.

game over!

Men like TV more than they like talking
Women like talking more than they like TV

you gotta think, which activity with have a negative impact on your life and marriage if you stopped doing it. When you stop talking to your wife, then you grow distant and she will have resentment towards you and then she will find someone else to talk to.
If you miss parts of your sports game, you will feel annoyed but it will not have a life changing effect on you and your marriage.

Also, try to watch things that interest the both of you, she obviously isn't interested in sports, biography of Stalin or channel 5 news. When we are watching Grey's Anatomy or House I shut the hell up because I am interested in what's on the screen.

Try to make time to spend with her. Sit down and talk to her and tell her that when the show is on you wanna watch. If you are always in front of the TV though you need to make time for her otherwise in the bedroom she wont make time for you. You two need to compromise.

My first though reading this question was, "turn off the TV" and without exhaling in that... "what is you problem?" kind of way.

I guess the best way to answer this, however, is... when is the last time you two went out on a REAL date?

Hope that helps get some wheels started turning.

Do what my husband did. He got DVR/Tivo, and everytime I start yapping he picks up the remote and pauses the TV. After a few time I usually get it and start to be quiet. If I choose not to be quiet at least he doesn't miss anything.

for Pete's sake man, she's your wife. BOND WITH HER. Maybe she's trying to show you that she wants to talk more with you, spend more time with you. TV isn't everything, your wife and family should be more important. This is what pre-set recordings and TIVO are for.
Turn off the tube. And engage in conversation with your hunny

Turn off the TV, go lay your head in her lap and look up at her like a little puppy dog. Do this everytime. When the TV goes off, the stark silence will shock her. After a few times, she'll leave you alone.
