we study for more then ten years like a bumpkin, then we spend the next several ten years working like a dog or a horse for the rich (companies), possibly forming a family. then we'll be waiting for death.

but seems to be too painful to suicide.
so why do we live?
seems the pain to die isn't a motive strong enough to drive us keep living.

We will never know the answer to this Q and some things are best left unanswered. Like the other Ans before, there is too much vagueness in the Q and there are many different angles at which it can be looked at and each ans is unique and most conflicting.

As the Ans before, don't waste precious time wondering things like this. Take life as it is and enjoy whats in it as time is shorter than you think especialy as you rightfuly said we have to work like donkeys and horses. Thats life as it is. If we live in and want to survive within a society we need such means which we get from working. And so we earn to pay back into society and a bit on the side for our own survival and enjoyment of course.

There is however another option which dependent on the person can b quite suitable. You can go to a place like India and give up worldly pleasures. You no longer belong to a society and that same society accepts you for giving up your world of luxuries as they appreciate the difficulty in doing so and in turn they give you alms to survive and you live off that and you have all the time in the world to ask and think of Q's like this and discuss with your fellow sadhus/sadhvis and other such ppl. Like I said some ppl can live this way and I couldn't it seems so hard and much more difficult, I'd rather be a donkey and work my a*se off.

Get out there and enjoy yourself and go find a job you enjoy, your clearly not happy where you are.

Good luck

I agree that a major portion of our life is wasted in studying, finding a job, and then making our employers richer and in the process fulfill the wishes of our family till we retire or die whichever comes first. But we can change it if we really try. We must ask ourselves honestly as to why are we here on this planet in the first place? Spiritually speaking we are here for ourselves and no one else. Selfish may it sound but we must do what makes us content and happy. If suicide is what it takes then so be it but we can do thousands of things and feel good about it if only we take the time to think about it.

We may even write a book of our experiences - triumphs and failures - all of it and let others take some lessons from it.

1. There is no God.

2. There is no Heaven/Hell/afterlife.

3. There is no true, objectively moral code or ethical paradigm.

4. There is no "meaning" or "purpose" to life.

5. The Universe is as real as we interpret it to be.

6. We are to act based upon our own wills and only our wills; never the will(s) of (an)other(s).

7. With what we have at our disposal, we should learn to develop our own meaning and purpose in life, individually; and, resultingly, live by this newfound virtue.

8. Instead of living life as a mass consumer, like a sheep herd or living meekly for the sake of a community, like the ant colony; one should live proudly and powerfully, like the lion's pride.

My motive for living is simply to live and enjoy what's around us. Enjoy what you have and be happy with it. That doesn't mean I should be irresponsible and leave everything, but I can enjoy what I can obtain.

I live because simply dying would be a defeat over all the years I already spent living. Don't waste time wondering what the meaning of life is, go find it.

I believe, Its the trail and tribulation of your soul. Its a series of lessons. Usually I find if I didn't get it first time round, I get a much harder lesson the next time.
Does feel pointless though doesn't it....
We're told to prolong our lives, eat healthy, exercise etc. This is hell, here you get murder, rape, starvation, war, child abuse, animal tortue, abused elderly oh the list is endless and lets not forget the root of all evil... Money!
I'm comin back as something else, you never see a chimp asking these question.
Sorry got carried away :)

Finally, an easy question. The meaning of life is to help others. It is the one thing you can do that will bring you lasting happiness. When you reach out to someone else and improve his quality of life, it comes back to you so many times over it is difficult to explain the benefits. The interesting thing here is that it often takes a lifetime to see this.

More than 30 disparate lives took time away from themselves to answer your question, and so reach out to you in acknowledgement that your isolation is not unique. This happened because you reached out and shared something of your thoughts with THE OUTSIDE. Try it again....but a little closer to home, and understand that we are all alone if we do not share our lives with others.

Firstly, life has no meaning. We are far too full of our own perceived importance in being alive that we forget we exists for a mere blink of an eye on a speck of dust in some far flung outskirts of the universe and are totally inconsequential

By a freak of nature and science, we have a brain that allows us to rationalise. Unfortunately, we try to rationalise everything.

So ... forget about any "meaning" to your life and get on and enjoy it. Personally, I couldn't be happier.
