I am turning 21 in a couple of months. Am I supposed to throw a birthday party or are my friends supposed to host? Is it my responsibility to organize this or is it up to my friends? I haven't had a birthday party since I was in elementary school when my parents threw them... What's "proper"?

There's no wrong or right answer.
I would throw it yourself, then you can make sure it's what you want - as it sounds quite important to you. You can always involve your friends in helping to organise it or planning a theme or night out.

21 is a special age. When I turned 21, I had a large party at a stakehouse that my family organized, but, the weekend after I turned 21, a few of my "of-age" friends, brought me out, so a little of both I suppose.

I think it really depends on your friends. Are you the one that has to organize everything when you are going out? If so, I would organize where you want to go and have them decide on the finner details of it. If you are fortunate enough to have a friend that is usually on top of things, I am sure they already have something in place for you. Unfortunately, it is only down hill after 21!!!

Well it really dosen't matter who throws your birthday party, long as you enjoy yourself. you can throw it if you want to but tell everyone to bring something. you can be responsible for decorations and music and food but have everyone else bring the drinks. if you have really good friends that you would want to throw you a party then give them some hints, let them know that your birhtday is coming and you want something special to happen.

What do you think? I would ask my friends if they would like to host it and if not, I would and make it the best party ever!
