I just recently moved into a new house and today we set up a cable modem. We set it up at one end of the house. After the technician left, I decided to use my Linksys router (which is in the same room) to connect a laptop (which does have a wireless card) to the internet that is in the other end of the house. However, the connection is very low and barely even connects. Is there something wrong with the router or the house? Another quick question is does marble tile affect the wireless connection in a house? Thanks.

Don't know how big your house is, but I'm guessing the distance from one end of the house to the other is too great, especially with intervening walls. If you really want that type of setup, you can buy a repeater for about $50 and install it in the middle of the house. The repeater will pick up the signals from the wireless router and your laptop and relay them (ie, "repeat" them) back & forth. The repeater won't have to be hardwired to a computer (except for an initial setup), just plugged it into an outlet.

Each wall between you and the signal degrades the signal. Take the laptop into the same room as the router if the signal connects and is strong then that's the issue. You didn't say if the router is on the same floor as the laptop. If it is the distance that is the problem try locating the router closer to the wall near where you will be using the laptop. Avoid placing the router in an area where ductwork will block the signal. also try to place the router so that the only walls between the router and the laptop are interior (non-insulated) walls.

If the signal doesn't connect when in the same room as the router release and renew your network ip. To do this go to Start>Run and type in "cmd" and hit enter (no quotes)

When the command window opens type in "ipconfig /release" and hit enter
Then type in "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter.

This will force your wireless card to reaquire the signal from the router.

Good Luck.

From the information you are giving, sounds like you may have too many walls between the router and your laptop. Bring the laptop to the same room and see if the signal improves. Make sure that the antennas on the router are pointing up. Also try resetting both the modem and the router. Disconnect the power to both modem and router. Let it sit a few minutes. Power up the modem first, then the router. You should have a manual with your Linksys. It should tell you how to connect to a cable mdem.

It might be that your laptop is out of range. On some routers you can increase the range, but by default it's usually maxed out anyway. Marble might make the signal bounce a bit more, and could weaken the signal further. You could try putting some rugs down to test the theory :)

If the signal is going through too many walls, that will also affect strength.

Go here to download Linksys Easy Advisor. It will check your installation and let you know what to do if something isn't working.
