could be an unhappy video card, possibly heat related.

You did not specify LCD or regular CRT monitor. LCD's have flourescent starters in them called inverters. They provide high voltage to the backlights which are mini-flourescent tubes on the sides of the LCD screen.

When they go they usually shut the backlights off and immediately re-start them. After a while, complete darkness. You can tell if it is the inverter, because when the video disappears, you can still see a faint image on the LCD in a lighted room.

Replacing an inverter costs about $40 for the part, vs $150-$300 for an LCD.

When a CRT monitor does this, it is usually the high voltage on the horizontal sweep and you may hear a faint crackle when it goies out and comes back on. Junk it and get an LCD if this is the case.

You video card may be loose, or damaged from age (nothing last's forever) or your monitor could be getting old and just waring out.
