Some people work to live, others live to work.

Well, if you want "more successful living and higher living qualities" (whatever that means) then yes, it does sound as if you may need to work hard.

I on the other hand have decided to live differently. I made sure my job fits in with my family and is something I quite enjoy. So while it doesn't pay very much, with my wife's earnings we get by quite comfortably. But more importantly I get to spend time with my family, work somewhere I can walk to from home (or from which I can walk to the school my wife works at and my daughter attends).

But in order to do this I had to 'readjust' my priorities. To my surprise, the things I enjoy most don't cost a huge amount. I have also been lucky enough to find a way to appreciate more of the 'little' things in life.

While it suits me it may not therefore suit everyone. But remember, we always have a choice. So 'don't put off until tomorrow what you might enjoy today' is my motto!

it's important to be hardworking because it is only then that you'd be able to reap the rewards. of course, there are those who work really hard, but of whom don't get what they want in the end, or still don't get what they deserve. working hard also demands a considerable level of commitment, perseverance and labour which is involved. yet, being hardworking shouldn't automatically mean you have to put so much pressure on yourself to achieve and fulfil your goals. as well as setting aside some time for leisurely pursuits and other hobbies, you must also work hard to your fullest potential and according to the levels you have set yourself. the problem i have is this notion that everyone has to live up to and fulfil such high expectations, expectations of which are somebody else's as opposed to your owns and which can be so unrealistic and way off the mark. when in truth, the only expectations you live up to are yours, and yours only. therefore, yes work hard but do your best at the same time

'Work' is not a consistent or constant universality as humans in the individual and particular concept are not universal. Non-work usually consists of activity that is stress relieving and does not evoke strong judgmental reactions. The use of the bodies physical power in a purely willful manner strengthens the positive components of the Spirit and helps to unify mind body and spirit promoting their concerted synchronicity and co-ordination. Such is the ambiguity for the word 'work'.

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

To actually answer your question, yes, it is a contradiction; they should not be conceived as opposites or antitheses for each other.

It is a contradiction in a sense. Except that we tend to appreciate leisure and entertainment more when feel we have worked for, and earned them....in the same way that chocolate and sex are much better when you've abstained from them for a while!!

to some, it may seem a contradictory. some people may wrok for leisure and entertainment, but the whole point of working is interacting with: community, other people. We also should be hardworking because it will give you a good feeling, you will also improve many things for yourself, family, world, future, and community.

Some people find great pleasure in being hardworking. For them, this is pleasure and entertainment combined. As for leisure, I guess they consider a good night's sleep enough.

Being a hard worker builds self esteem,Character,Persaverance, (I might have spelled it wrong)It keeps you healthy, Keeps the mind clear of all nonsense,Its keeps you out of trouble. (A old saying here in the US "Idle hands is the devil's workshop".Nowadays hardwork really dont get you rich. After a long days work you can gladly look back a think to yourself and feel some sort of accomplishment.

No, especially if you work hard doing what you love doing. That's the problem with people, they try to live up to the standards of the cliche Chistrian virtues instead of developing one individual virtue for themselves to live by.

For instance, I am an artist. I love art and drawing. Thus, I am a graphic designer. I love what I do and work hard at it. Not because i NEED to. But because it is my virtue, my creation and it fulfills me.

Find a virtue for yourself and work hard at it. Don't feel pressured to commit to virtues of other people because it'll never make you happy.

As Nietzsche said, love your virtue as a mother loves her child.
