It's a little bit of a racist term. Guys in the ghetto appreciate a girl with some back, and the girls don't mind being a little curvier than a chick in the suburbs.

I think beardog43 hit this one right on. Whoopi Goldberg used to talk about her BWA (black woman's a$s), and how she LOVED walkin' down the street with her BWA and her dreds swingin', gettin' the good looks from all the bro's in the 'hood.
Black's acceptance of a heavier, curvier form - it may be "sorta racist" but it's a widely acknowledged phenom - I've seen it written up in the Washington Post.
