That's got to be Death Note! It's rated the best anime ever on AnimeNewsNetwork and a lot of people love it.

Depends on what your definition of famous is.
Amongst the general audience, Death Note is. But amongst the hardcore otaku elite, the most famous anime of 2006 goes to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I would have to say Princess Tutu, because the series has breathed life into the shoujo genre! It is unexpected, captivating, and simply beautiful. The fanbase is increasing by the day, Ushiko's Block Party at the end of January in Texas focused on Princess Tutu. It's a great series that has defies expectations, grabbing the attention of many critics! If you have not seen it yet, check it out!
