Bags for poop. A tube for men to pee into. A cup that fits into the right spot for women. The tube and the cup both have a slight vacuum suction going, so the pee goes in instead of wandering away and splashing over stuff. NASA doesn't talk about space bathrooms much because it makes spaceflight seem unglamorous and makes astronauts look unheroey. Politics demands glamor and heroes in exchange for project funding. That's why they definitely don't like this scandal in which Lisa Nowak is involved. It might cost them later, when Congress is working on the national budget.

The astronauts do use a kind of diaper--but jsut for special situations like when they have to spend hours in a spacesuit. They do have specially designed bathrooms--but unless someone happens to know the details, you may have trouble finding out how theywork--NASA doesn't like to talk about that aspect of space travel! :)

As I recall from a paper I read - they use both. The diapers are used for take-offs and landing (and re-entering) but bags are used while orbiting.

pre takeoff and landing they're suited up with diapers,in space they have vacuum suction toilets and flex tube orifices for evacuation, they need to strap themselves so they dont fly off,and the waste is stored in bags and compressed for storage and disposal upon landing
