hippos mostly eat fruits, vegetables and grasses - when they are outside of the water - in the wild they frequently go out on the shore at night to graze (eat grass) - in zoos they sometimes eat lettuce in the water but usually eat most of their food on land..

The center of a hippo's day life is water. Like a hippo pool-party, sometimes hundreds of hippos, will share a territory of water during the day. Whether it's mating, playing, fighting or giving birth, hippo's all wet. The hippo's night life begins a few hours after sunset, when all the hippos file out of the water to graze on land by the light of the moon. Hippos have huge mouths and teeth, even though they eat grass. A bull hippo's canines can grow to 28 inches long, and their mouths can open four feet wide! Hippos are herbivores - they only eat plant life - and their favorite food is short grass. They can eat up to 150 lbs of grass a day, but did you know that the average cow eats more in a day than the average hippo?? Hippos normally only venture out during nights to graze and may go up to 6 miles from the water, but on a normal night only go about half that distance. First the hippo grabs the very bottom of the grass with it's strong lips (that can be up to 24 inches wide) and then swipes it's head to the side to tear off the grass. Isn't that interesting? Sometimes they might eat the vegetation in the water, but most of the time they don't.

They sink to the bottom and graze like a cow does, only they eat water grasses.

They are grazers so staying down where they can graze on grasses is important. They can somewhat control their buoyancy enough to let them walk on the bottom to find food and they can stay down for very long periods of time without breathing.
