When the universe first was formed, the two most common elements were hydrogen and helium. As the stars compacted and the pressure built up at their core... the pressure was so great they lit up due to fusion. The elements became compacted so tightly the heavier elements were formed. Iron was the heaviest. Then over time as each star burned its available fuel they would go nova or super nova. These tremendous explosions were what formed the heavier elements like gold and lead.
