Go through a roommate matching service and do a backround check, on any prospective roommates. Also ask for references and contact them.

Ask your friends if they know a "reputable person" looking for a roommate.

Go with a friend of a friend.

Friends often make lousy roommates, and friends of friends of friends, ditto. But with a friend of a friend, you're usually safe.
