Aung San Suu Kyi was on the 19th of June 1945 in Yangoon. She has devoted herself to be a nonviolent pro-democracy activist. She is also the leader of an association called The National League for Democracy. When she had founded this organization she was put under house arrest. People offere her freedom if she left the country but chose to stay under the arrest to fight for what she believes in. Aung San Suu Kyi is also a devoted Buddhist. (Buddhism is the religion and way of life many people choose to follow to reach enlightenment and relieve themselves from suffering. Buddhism was founded by a Prince Siddhartha, who gave up his royal life to try to find the end of all suffering for others). Aung San Kyi won the Rafto prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990. Finally in 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She won the Nobel Peace Prize for leading a non-violent and peaceful struggle under a military dictatorship. She continues to be an inspiration for us and many other people. In 2003 she was awarded the "Free your Mind" award by MTV's VMAs. Many artists like U2, Black-eyed-peas, coldplay, and many more have dedicated songs to her and performed concerts to support her causes.

She is a great person who fights for things that many of us wouldn't have the courage to stand up for.
