Sleep is ESSENTIAL for good health.
When you sleep, you have both REM and non-REM sleep. One of these is responsible for healing you (repairing muscles, improving blood flow, regrowing tissues, healing injuries, etc) physically
while the other is necessary for mental health healing.
There have been many studies done in Psychology where people are kept in a lab to sleep, monitored, and woken up every time they enter REM sleep (or vice versa) for days on end... and the results have been very dangerous to your health.
A day or so won't hurt, but don't mess up your sleep patterns too often or you'll mess up your health as well!

I really love my sleep. If I stay up late I can hardly function the next day until around noon. I have always been like this.

Your body regenerates itself during sleep. It helps you heal from a previous day's workout, fights illness, and most importantly it rejuvenates your mind. You are able to get away with it every once and while. Remember, you cannot make up for lost sleep. Lack of sleep has the same effect as drunk driving.

I have slept in split shifts for over twenty years. A couple hours at night and three or four more in the day. It sucks but you get used to it.

Yes and you lose blood that way.You see the body needs enough sleep to recover from the day,s burdens and sleep corrects that.So have good nights rest.
