I would recommend you wait until you take SAT II's. The test isn't incredibly in depth, but it will be more in depth than a regular biology class or an honors biology course. You should probably wait until you take AP Biology. If you aren't going to take AP biology, but still want to take the test, then you are going to have to study on your own. It's not too bad, i think biology is fun, because you're actually learning about the real world and how we live. I don't like hte BArron's as a study guide, get like Princeton review or something. I used the barron's, and got screwed over on the test since i knew nothing about physio or ecology (okay fine, i got 780, but i had expected to get 800).

As for a good score, it's relative. If you're an absolute, super achiever, one ot hte top few hundred science students in the nation, then like 800 is essential. But overall, 700+ is good.

im a sophomore and i took the sat 2 bio last oct. i advise u to use Princeton's Review instead of Barron's. it's a LOT more comprehensive. the test is more detailed than a freshman bio course though. to get above 600, u will probably need to study, but its not as detailed as a bio ap course.
