Why don't they export the good stuff?

Two reasons:

1) If it is actually imported from Germany, the beer goes through extreme temperature changes in the plane and just throughout its travel. Also, the beer is older by the time it gets to stores (plus there isn't much turnover, so it probably sits on the shelf for a while) and beer, especially hefeweizen, doesn't age well.

2) As someone said above, a lot of "imported" stuff is not necessarily imported, but made at a factory in the States or at least in North America (example: you can buy Milka candy bars in the States but they are made in the States, not imported from Germany). When something is made elsewhere, it just doesn't have the exact same taste (another example: sweet and sour sauce at McD's tastes a LOT different in the States as compared to Germany).

Hope that helps. I do have to say though.. even though the beer isn't quite as good as what you would get in Germany.. it's still a ton better than any of the American standards (excluding some good microbrews).

Try Grolsch beer at 7 percent. Also, Danish Faxe dark beer at 8 percent. Bunch of chickens around here, people have to drink 4 percent light beer. They should load up on Guinness

I don't think it's that.
I have gone to different countries and brought EXACT items that I ate/drank over there back here, and they never taste the same.
I think it has more to do with the environment - the air we breathe, etc, is DIFFERENT, so it affects the taste immensely.
I guess the goods are not meant to be consumed outside their natural habitat, if that makes any sense.
That being said, Beck's isn't bad at all.
If you like it lighter but still with a full-bodied taste, try Dominican 'Presidente' or 'Quisqueya'. Not bad....

Quality over quantity.... German beer is so much better because they take the time to make sure its brewed RIGHT... the good stuff stays in the country... then rest gets shipped out

Because of the Bavarian Purity Law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinheitsgebot

Sorry, I do not know why they do not import it, but do not need to know because I am now an American living in Germany and get it every day.

If you ever want to visit a gorgeous city, check out Lindenberg!
