I'm living in PA, USA. The landlord advertise the place as a three br apartment with one of the room converted from a sun room to a bedroom. I thought she fixed it so it can deal with the cold weather, but my room is freezing cold even if I turn up the thermostat up to about 70 degrees and I have a small space heater going on at the same time. I've placed up plastic and fleece on the windows to keep air from coming but it's not helping. I can't sleep in my room because it's almost the same temperature outside and my apartment is freezing, air is leaking and I'm spending money to keep my room AND the apartment warm. My landlord doesn't understand this and just say it's the cold spell that is going on but it's even when it's in the 30s and 40s I can't warm up the room. So, I end up sleeping on the couch dealing with back problems. What should I do?

Go online and check your state or local renters codes. See if there is a published guide for renters. It's very possible that it's not even legal for the landlord to rent the place as a 3 bedroom place if the sunroom is not up to certain standards. For example,in CA it's not legal to rent a place that does not have adequate heating. It has to be considered "habitable" If it doesn't meet the codes then you could talk to the landlord about fixing the room so it does. If not, they may have to rent it as a 2 bedroom. Of course they may boot you.. but it dose not sound like the place is very livable anyway. I assume you have other roommates and cannot just use one of the other bedrooms?

I would advise you to have a stern talk with the landlord. Call him/her on her phone and tell them that you ARE going to talk to them about the house, or you're not going to pay lease. It's just NOT up for debate, you are paying, so you deserve a degree of fairness. It has nothing to do with a damn cold spell! That isn't the point, the point was false advertising!!! That room wasn't meant to be a damn bedroom anyway. You need to be more assertive towards the landlord.

Good luck...
