The moon due to its material composition and due to the fact that is inclined 5 degree to the ecliptic makes it an ideal mirror.
It receive a light energy flux from the Sun though some is absorbed by the moon 's atom it reflect a great deall of light enough to partially iluminate the Earth.

Lunar light is generated by the reflection of sun light on the moons surface. The reason there are stages on the lunar cycle is that the earth's shadow is casted on the moon, the position of the moon around the earth gives us different stages.
