Most residential construction use wood, rather than metal studs.
The studs have nails that hold the drywall. (Studfinders find nails in the studs)

Depending on the quality of construction, outside walls usually have 18" space between studs. Inside walls get away with 24" spacing. A lot of it depends on local and state builing ordinances.
(All distances are "on-centers" or from center to center,)

Any other metal would be plumbing and electrical conduit tubing. Location would be as required.

Go visit a construction site and take a look. If you're lucky, you can talk to the foreman on the site, and ask him/her to explain some of the details.

Kind of a vague question. Could be studs, could just be armoured plates installed by the electrician on wood studs to protect his wiring from drywall screws. Both of these would typically be 16inches on center. Although it could be a metal cashbox stashed by a previous owner. If so, only God knows how far apart they`d be.

Metal studs are replacing wood in commercial buildings, because it is easier to work with for the construction workers. I've worked with both and they have their pros and cons. From center to center, the standard is 16".

Rule of thumb, 16 inches. Use a good magnate or stud finder to know for certain.
