males get a vasectomy
females get a hysterectomy

Usually they get their tubes tied instead. "Spayed" is a hysterectomy, and "neutered" is what it sounds like. A little extreme.
EDIT:
To clear up all the confusion - hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus and ovaries, and it's only done if there is some disease in them. Women who want permanent birth control get their fallopian tubes cut and tied (the tubes that connect the ovaries and uterus). Removing the ovaries causes premature aging and all kinds of problems, you wouldn't do it for birth control.

yep, happens every minute of everyday; well maybe not the neutering, but the spaying sure does.

Yes, I have an ex that was "neuteured". (Vasectomy) When women are "spayed", they've either had a tubal ligation, hysterectomy(removal of uterus) or removal of the ovaries.

Yes. I saw it on the news recently. Its a jealous wife that caught her husband in bed with another woman. Then the wife pretended to forgive and had sex with him. Then she got a knife while he was sleeping and let's just say, that's the last time he ever had sex!
