Because of him, black men know they have the opportunity to achieve."
This might be the rhetoric you will get here. Colin Powell, a black man, was the top military man in the country as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In civilian life, he was our top diplomat as Secretary of State in George W. Bush's first four years administration. Powel is a good man, an honorable man, but the tragedy here is that his accomplishments are not one in a million, they are one is a billion!
Powell is put up as showing Blacks that only their laziness keeps them from achieving. Powell perpetuates the concept that anything in America is possible. Through hero-ification Powell is made to be more than he actually is. The result is that Black kids are made to feel that they are failures when they don't reach the same as Powell. American society ignores the fact that the poor, the minorities and many others face oppression and roadblocks such as low expectations, malnutrition, poor schools, less resources and the list goes on and on.
You see, when we say that Colin Powel did it, so you can too, we ignore the fact that we have problems in American Society. The rich have many opportunities, the middle class have some opportunity, but children of the poor have little or no opportunity to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff! How can kids without parents, or parents on drugs, kids with not enough food to eat, kids who go to substandard schools, kids who are ignored by their teachers and since the kids are ignored they drop out of school; how can kids born with two strikes against them ever strive to be the top military leader of the United States of America? You see (they say) if Black Kids are not successful, its' the Black Kid's fault!
Colin Powel is a good man, but to put his accomplishments in front of many Black Youth and say "you can do it too", is pure folly. Such a goal is not realistic and only furthers the idea that Blacks are lazy.

He's famous for a lot of things, but mainly for being Secretary of State under the Bush Administration (before Condi). He also has high military ranking, and started out with almost nothing (I think he worked in a factory before he joined the military). He's a great man. I got to hear him speak once before he was the S. of S., he was a spokesperson for America's Promise then.

Being Secretary of State, most likely.
He'll also be remembered as the high-profile American who went before the Security Council and accused Iraq of having chemical and biological weapons specifically prohibited under SC Resolution 665.
