If there are 6 people going to dinner and one of them isn't sure if he'll be able to make it, Shall we book a table for 5 or 6 people?
We're going at 8 and the 6th person said he might join us at 9 but he's not sure . When we get to the restaurant should we save a chair for him?

The thing is,It's a very posh expensive restaurant and it's very busy on weekends. I'm not sure if that would look good.

Book for 6 because that way the arrangement is all ready set up and its easier to take one chair away than to add an extra table or chair.

Book the table for six but tell the restaurant when you book that there will be five to start with and the sixth will be joining later. That way you will not be left hanging around while the restaurant thinks you are still waiting for the rest of the party. Most restaurants are very accommodating if you tell them what is going on, they are not psychic.

It won't make much of a difference either way because a table large enough for five will seat six. They can just add another chair. However, I suggest making it for six because many restaurants won't reserve a table for fewer than six guests. Have fun!

make reservations for more ppl rather than less. so book it for 6 instead of 5. if he doesn't show up it won't be a prob...i mean there' s no extra cost for someone that didn't show. and gratuity is only included in the bill if there are more than 8 ppl..typicallly. so no worries book it for 6. enjoy!!

You book for 6, and tell them the other person may be running late.

I would make it for 6. It seems it would be easier and less embarrassing to keep an empty chair than to add one later.

Make it for 6, if he shows he'll have a place to sit if not no one will mind the empty seat.
